Healing Song

One of the things I love about acupuncture is that, in addition to the theory and science behind it, there is also the direct experience of receiving it, and this is just as much a part of its efficacy as anything else. Music also has this ability, to heal by virtue of the direct experience it offers to the listener. Music speaks directly to the heart, which is considered the seat of consciousness in East Asian medicine.

There have been a number of studies showing the efficacy of music in regulating vitals, supporting sleep, and reducing pain, both in infants and individuals in palliative care. I find that singing to my clients softens body, energy, and mind, making them more receptive to the other therapies offered in a given session.

With respect, I borrow songs from a variety of musical and healing traditions, which I have learned directly from practitioners of those traditions. I also sing folk songs, lullabies, and songs that I and other songsters in my life receive directly from nature.
